So The Invite Says… Black Tie. Now What?

May 12, 2026

Let me guess. The invitation landed in your inbox, you read the words “black tie” and immediately felt a wave of panic. What does that even mean? How dressed up is too dressed up? Can you wear that dress you have been saving or is it not formal enough?

Trust me, you are not alone. Black tie is one of the most misunderstood dress codes in the world and I have seen even the most stylish women second guess themselves when they see those two words on an invite. So let us break it down properly because once you understand what black tie is actually asking of you, it becomes one of the easiest dress codes to get right.

First Things First – What Does Black Tie Actually Mean?

Black tie is not a colour instruction. It is not telling you to wear black. It is a formality level. It is the invitation’s way of telling you that this is a serious, elegant event and your outfit needs to match that energy. Think floor length gowns, refined fabrics, elevated accessories, and an overall sense of intention in how you put yourself together.

But here is what most people do not realise, black tie does not look the same across every event. The occasion, the venue, and even the time of day all influence how you interpret it. So let us talk about the three most common black tie situations you will encounter, especially here in Nigeria.

Black Tie at a Wedding

This is the most common one and also the one with the most unspoken rules. When a wedding invitation says black tie, your job is to show up looking stunning while remembering one very important thing: you are a guest. Not the bride.

That means white is completely off the table. So is ivory, champagne, and anything that sits in that family of colours. It also means pulling back on anything that feels too bridal, heavy embellishment from head to toe, dramatic trains, or anything that competes with the wedding party for attention.

What works beautifully at a black tie wedding is a rich, single colour floor-length gown. Think deep emerald, burgundy, midnight blue, or a warm rust. Nigerian designers create pieces in these colour families that are genuinely breathtaking, the fabric work, the draping, the finishing. These are pieces built for exactly this kind of moment.

Black Tie at a Gala or Red Carpet Event

This is where you get to be the main character. Unlike a wedding where you are dressing in someone else’s honour, a gala or red carpet black tie event is your moment to tell your own style story. Go dramatic. Go bold with colour. Wear the long train you have been dying to debut. Pull out that one of a kind accessory that has been sitting in your wardrobe waiting for the right occasion.

This is not the time to play it safe. A gala rewards confidence and a strong point of view.

Black Tie at a Corporate Event

Corporate black tie is the most misunderstood of the three and the one where I see the most mistakes. The key thing to remember is that this event is still connected to a professional context. That means you reel it back in.

This is not the time to wear your entire jewellery collection. It is not the time for the most dramatic piece in your wardrobe. What the room is asking for is elegance, clean, well tailored, structured, and polished. Think dark colours, clean silhouettes, and a look that says “I belong in this room” rather than “I am going to an awards show.” A floor length dress, a well cut midi, or tailored trousers all work beautifully here. Let the quality of the fabric speak for you.

One More Thing – Always Factor In The Venue

Whether it is a wedding, a gala, or a corporate event, the venue changes things. An outdoor black tie event in Lagos at 5pm is a completely different dressing situation from an indoor gala at 8pm. For outdoor events, think carefully about your footwear on grass or uneven surfaces, choose fabrics that breathe, and consider how natural light will photograph. For evening indoor events, you can lean into heavier fabrics, more structured silhouettes, and deeper richer colours knowing the lighting will reward you.

The Bottom Line

Black tie is really just asking you to show up with intention. And once you understand what each occasion is asking of you specifically, the outfit becomes much easier to build. You stop guessing and start dressing with purpose.

That is what great style always comes back to; intention. And that is exactly what I am here to help you build, one occasion at a time.
